As you may know my primary work is market research so I’ve decided to go for a survey to find out whether boys pay for the dinner or not and what factors may affect their decision.

I’ve created small 5 minutes survey in a tool we are using for real online research (and scripted it myself too, btw!) and here are rough results of 47 responses I got and reporting link –

Target group: Age 20-40, London and Riga men audience

The idea or this small survey was to find out whether their reaction will change depending on different factors:
  1. So first questions were based on the dates with girls that men were familiar with
  2. With online dating when man saw the girl for the first time in his life

Here are some key findings:
  • If you knew each other in person before the date boys will always either pay for you immediately or pay if only you won’t insist to split the bill unless: a) you were the initiator of this date or b) they understand that you don’t like them
  • If you knew each other in person before the date AND you offered to go on this date (so you like that boy) then only 57-58% of men are ready to pay, others either will wait for you to ask to split the bill or offer you to split it themselves. Same happens if they invited you for a date but You showed them clearly that you are not interested in them
  • If that’s an online date and boy finds you attractive in real life he’ll most likely pay for the bill unless you insist to split. But only half of them are ready to pay if you’ll show them you are not interested in any further relationships
  • If that’s an online date and boy finds you attractive in real life, but you were the initiator of this date you still have good chance (around 75%) to avoid paying for your bill
  • If a boy invited you for an online date but you didn’t meet his expectation and he doesn’t find you attractive in real life then you are in trouble – only 40% are ready to pay, another 17 will be waiting for you to ask and split the bill. But be aware! Around 20% of them may go to the bathroom during the dinner and then escape, run away from you, so you’ll have to pay for both! That’s why it is not advisable to put too beautiful photos of you in your social networks if yo can’t look same good on the real date
  • And then the worst case scenario is if you are not very pretty in life, but asked a boy for a date yourself and somehow he agreed to that. Only 28% of them will be brave enough to finish the dinner and actually pay for the whole bill. Others are either ready to quit and leave you alone with the bill or even before the actual dinner

For online dating I used these pictures to indicate pretty and not that pretty girls just to make things clearer, so some of boys were really scared


There were some funny open-end answers provided, like e.g.:

With pretty girl:
  • "Dinner on the first date is a bad move... Drinks are usually best" (I bet they are!)
  • "If she was rude, split. But if she was nice, I'll pay." (Girls, never ever be rude with guys so you won’t get to pay )
  • "I have no idea, I've never been invited to a date by a girl." (“Forever alone face&rdquo
If she was not that pretty:
  • "Get her drunk and try my luck" (Brilliant plan )
  • "Go to the bathroom and never come back!"
  • "Cимулирую приступ эпилепсии непосредственно перед ужином"
  • "No, no, no no, no..."
  • "I would run before eating. It's a challenge to eat with such kind of a person"
  • "I would probably die of heart attack. there is a limited if what human being can tolerate and that photo exceeded it"

After all I have also understood that either I am very lucky or absolute majority of my dates thought I am pretty and that I liked them too (which wasn't always true, obviously), because I never had to pay or split the bill on my dates

Anyway that was fun experience and some boys gave me the following feedback after completion – “I understand that I pay for everything and everywhere no matter of what…”, true gentlemen!
