Having a free ride and seeing an unknown destination- that was my intention when I selected 'hitchhiking' as one of my Dukasummer contest tasks, and I was a bit excited too as I had never ventured this kind of travelling! I work in a small island and there is no point in travelling in this tiny area but I have seen my colleagues taking their motorbikes in the boats to remote islands -may be to visit their friends or to conduct some short term business ventures during the mid-term or the term-end holidays.

Main Means Of Conveyance

Boats, boats and more boats -that is what comes to your mind when you think about traveling in Maldives. Except in the capital Male' city and a few other advanced and spacious islands you will not find any other vehicle than these motorcycles. A bit more advanced islands will have an ambulance and some times one or two pick-ups too.

So I informed my intention to my frequently travelling friends. and the First term-end holidays were between the 14th of July to the 22nd of July. Unfortunately, Only two of my colleagues moved out of the island with their motorbikes and their destination was the capital city Male'.

Male' was the last place I wanted to enjoy during my holidays, especially for two reasons. First one is that even during off-season it used to be extremely tough to find a place to stay and during the holidays it will be nearly impossible unless you are capable of spending a few hundreds of dollars every day to move along the crowd.
The second reason is that there isn't much left in Male' to enjoy since every time during
our year-end vacation while going home and coming back we have to stay there for a few days waiting for the turn of our boats tour island.

Hence, Hitchhiking in Maldives has remained as a dream which is anyhow free. There is always a next time!

Thank you.
