Hi everyone!
I've just understood that there are many people from different places all over the world and it may be interesting to read something about each one's city
So, Saint-Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia with the population near 5,5 millions people. It is located very close to Finland and Estonia, at the head of the Golf of Finland, on Neva river. Having such a great location it becomes one of the most important Russian ports. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27th May 1703 with the purpose of creation a strong capital. Saint-Petersburg was the capital of Russia until 1918, when this status was transferred to Moscow. The city has magnificent architecture, which is not similar at all with other Russian cities. And this fact is not a very surprising one because Saint-Petersburg was built with the European guiding line - Peter the Great wanted it to be quite similar with Amsterdam and Venice - his favourite european cities. And this goal was reached. The best architects from all around the world were working on creating this city. Antonio Rinaldi, Andrey Voronikhin, Carlo Rossi, Auguste de Montferrand, Giacomo Quarenghi, Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Domenico Trezzini - they all contributed in the process of building of this city.In order not to make you very bored with the huge amount of historical facts and references I will talk just about the most interesting, affecting but at the same time the most horrific one. In times of Second World War, Saint-Petersburg faced the siege, which was made by German forces that occupied the city. It was a kind of circle which isolated the city from all the external communication. These 872 days and nights of occupation were awful for citizens - they were resisting the hunger (because all the storages were destructed by German planes), the cold (that winters, unfortunately, were extremely cold). This siege carried away more than 1 million of lives but the city survived and haven't given up. In the modern history this event is proved as one of the longest and most destructive. The siege was splitted on 27th January 1944. In 1945 Saint-Petersburg has received a status of a Hero City of the War.So, coming to some more positive facts and closer to nowadays, Saint-Petersburg is loved by tourists. This year it took the first place in the list of the most "touristic" cities.Hope it was interesting for you to read this article. And, of course, if you have some questions, you are welcome!
Also I would be very happy to hear something interesting about your city!
P.S. I've attached some photos of the city for you
