The 'Bodu Eid' (or the 'Big Festival') is fast approaching. So the women folk of the island are busy practising the 'Bashi' for the Eid tournament. Eid-Ul-Adha, this year, falls on the first week of September. I caught up with them during my late evening stroll and clicked some snaps.
'Bashi" is an exclusively Maldivian game. Women play in teams in a place like a tennis court with tennis balls-for a change- plenty of them at a go. In this traditional sport, one woman from a team stands in the court facing away from the net and strikes the balls one after the other very fast, backwards, and the opposite team as a whole try to catch as many as possible. And even if they fail to catch and score most of the times, a few of them do not miss ending up with sprained or broken fingers.
Try your turn of Bashi, Enjoy!
