I must confess - internet plays quite important role in my life and no matter how I try to disagree and avoid this - it always follows me.
But let me note, that I am only using social networks as a tool to find people and keep contact, meeting in person is much preferable, however I don't see any harm in finding and meeting people online.
Online field helps in person's background research, but the main rule is not to take it as 100% true, because you never know how this information ended up being published.
Another reason of internet being really good tool for finding someone special is that I believe the best people are just too shy to introduce themselves in real life, especially if you meet someone you like on the street or that person is with someone else. Internet helps.
However I also have had bad but funny experience when one guy showed me his affection by sending me some creepy pervert videos of him and my photos inserted in those videos. That guy was a real freak, very annoying, but I kind of took it with laugh. the scenario of those videos was always more or less the same - my photos from the internet in slideshow and him talking some bullshit on the background, then showing himself half naked (only top of his body thanks God!) and making some weird funny faces.
A couple of years ago that guy was taken under arrest for sexual attack on some girls on the street and confirmed guilty in pedophilia acts, so I was lucky that my "acquaintance" with that guy didn't end up in real life!!!
So it is always useful to be very careful with any contacts online, as you never know who sits behind that other screen
