Why resting is important

I was thinking how to improve my efficiency and focus. So the key is the art of combining proper rest and concentration regime of the brain.

Our brain shifts into a state of wandering when we are not engaged in a task, and it hijacks our consciousness if the task we are doing gets boring, Levitin (2014), “The organized mind”. It means we do not pay attention to the task and it is often called shift to daydreaming mode.Neuroscientists have discovered that this is the natural state of the mind or default mode. It means the brain is restoring itself and brain is not engaged in any purposeful task.

When we relax, our mind wanders fluidly from topic to topic, not in particular order. So it is the contracts to the focused and task-oriented brain mode. During the demanding task or goal oriented task performance, the central executive brain kicks in. Two cannot be the same time but alters. Our problem is that most often we tend to mix the two together, working yet trying to rest, resting yet worried or trying to do something and the result is exhaustion. Let working be pure concentration and good attention and rest be pure rest. Our brain and body cannot function effectively and needs rest.

The right and effective strategy would be 90/20, or 1/7 rule, it means concentrate 90 minutes and take rest at least 20 minutes. Also, work for 6 days and rest 1 day. So our productivity level and energy will be kept at normal.
