The smell of the soil, shouts and shrieks of ecstasy, fists thrown up in the air and a surreal concert going. This visual itself has got something mystical in the making. The open-air concerts or even fairs used to tantalize me during the childhood days. Not so much now -don't know why. May be because of the insatiable love towards books and reading. The writers and thinkers rarely conduct such 'popular' events!

Confused identity

It is said that a settled society excels with its fine arts, music and cultural activities. The society with a rich culture will demonstrate itself in myriad colors and melodies. All through these years, i have been with this island nation people, I have noticed that they don't have a clear conviction about the culture they are following or have to follow. The older generation tried to nurture something which never became theirs and the younger generation witnesses a bewildering kaleidoscopic view of the world beamed through the modern media and even exhibited by tourists coming from the richest sections of the world.

Culture-Shock At Home

So we have a kind of dance without much of a classical touch hence no need to improvise, there is a so called theater without any note worthy writers and actors, and so on.

In the schools too this mild chaos creeps in. Most of them love music- copied or borrowed,of course. But there are many who think it is 'haraam' or a bane to listen or study or teach music.

In such scenario what to expect at an open-air concert? Something of everything they can put hands on and except for the benevolent nature around, we feel sorry for all that hue and cry around.

In spite of all these there is something tantalizing about an open air concert-that too at the night. At least for a while. we linger around as if searching for something we have lost somewhere else for sure.
