It is a well-known fact that human beings are judged by their deeds. Of no doubt the most demonstrative deeds of individuals are their experience and achievements in life. It is very often said that the amount of every person’s achievements indicates the level of one’s personal strength and integrity. However, in my opinion a person should also be judged by the future aspirations. My personal achievements defined me and will continue to pave the way into my future.

I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, a very profound and complicated country. As Winston Churchill described “Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” Although, I always loved my country, from my early childhood I felt an inclination to discovering something more unusual. I dreamt of traveling abroad and seeing modern democratic world as it was portrayed in movies, newspapers, and books. The foreign world seemed to me so unbelievably free, independent and beautiful in many ways. The most appealing opportunity for me seemed to obtain an education in a different country, especially for the political and economic differences.

To my big surprise when I was in 13 years old my small family consisting only of my mother and older sister, since my father passed away when I was 6 years old, decided to move to the United States of America. Without a question, moving to the United States was a very challenging undertaking no matter how advanced and prosperous the country might seem. Adapting to another country’s norms is always a cultural shock that involves learning new language, getting familiar with various systems that govern the country, adopting new believes, meeting new people and places, and getting used to different culture. Simply put, it wasn’t easy. However, with great persistence and one day at the time we were becoming part of the new culture.

However, as it often happens when you achieve your goal you quickly set another one for yourself to follow. When I finished high school, my next goal became obtaining higher education.

When I was growing up in Russian, I was interested in pursuing several careers. But when I came to the United States, I found myself specifically gravitating toward finance and business fields. In order to enroll to a well-respected university, I had to speak fluent English which of course presented another challenge. However, it didn’t stop me and I began working on perfecting my English on daily basis.

After enrolling and successfully completing my studies in Rutgers University, I naturally set another set of goals. My goal was to obtain a graduate degree. After carefully considering my choices of academic programs for graduate studies, I never thought that obtaining law degree would be a possible dream for me. Naturally, it presented another set of challenges completely unknown to me, such as learning even more advanced and legal form of English language and getting familiar with American judicial and legal system. After taking entrance exam and successfully passing the interview process, I couldn’t believe myself that I was accepted to study in Seton Hall School of Law.

When I began to study, I also realized that most of my peers have parents attorneys and came from families with legal backgrounds. At that point, even bigger challenge for me was to face my doubts and work on building up my confidence to complete studies in law school. Without question, my three years in law school changed my entire life in countless ways. School helped me greatly in modifying my attitudes, as for the first time I was with peers from much different backgrounds who I felt were much more superior and advanced than me.

My next goal became completing my legal studies in Seton Hall School of Law and passing one of the most difficult bar exams, New York State Bar. However, once again I put my mind to it and was able to achieve my goals one at the time. After obtaining law degree and successfully passing the bar exam, I realized that the world will never again seem the same to me and there always will be next set of achievements ahead of me.

All of my personal and professional achievements described above were very important in my life. But I know that the greatest achievements of my life are ahead of me. There is a whole big world around me and a road of life before me. I will put all my efforts following this road and achieving the best I can in my future.

As Edmund Hillary once said “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” To my mind overcoming multiple obstacles to achieve my goals may be considered as one of my most achievements.
